Two halves of the mold are usually required to form the complete shape of the desired object. The halves are then aligned and secured, ensuring that they accurately fit together.


Once the mold is prepared, the metal is heated to its melting point. Common metals used in sand casting include aluminum, iron, and bronze. The molten metal is then poured into the cavity of the mold through a pouring system. This pouring process requires precision to avoid defects, such as air pockets or improper filling, which can compromise the integrity of the final product.

After the metal cools and solidifies, the mold is broken apart to reveal the casting. The cast part may have some rough surfaces or excess material known as flash, which can be removed in subsequent finishing processes. Additional methods such as sandblasting, machining, or polishing are often employed to achieve the desired surface finish and dimensional accuracy.


One of the main advantages of sand casting is its ability to produce large and intricate parts with little investment in unique tools or equipment. It is particularly advantageous for low-to-medium volume production runs. The process allows for significant flexibility in terms of part size and complexity, accommodating a wide variety of industrial applications.


However, sand casting does have some limitations, such as its relatively slow production speed and the potential for defects in the final product. Despite these challenges, continued advancements in materials and techniques have allowed sand casting to remain a popular choice in modern manufacturing.
